Catia was born in Rio de Janeiro in a family of musicians. She started to sing at four with the encouragement of her father who sometimes gives her a cruzeiro for a song. When she was 16, she won the first price of the Rio National Festival with her brother and started to sing for jingles, studio sessions and so forth.
As soon as she got her History teacher dipoma, she quit studying to develop her musical career and entered the ‘Brazilian circuit’, hired by one of the biggest producers in Rio. In 1985, she has offered to go on an international tour with four other singers for a big Brazilian show in Broadway, followed by Paris. Unfortunatly, the show turned out to be a complete failure as the producers disappeared without paying the musicians.
A difficult period started for Catia. During those hard times, Catia started to sing in all the clubs of the capital. This was also when she met Marcello Ferreira, who became her true friend as well as her personal guitar player, author and composer.Soon after, she was hired for a three-month American tour, and played in festivals in Nice or in Montreux.
She appeared with some famous performers like Toure Kunda, Patrick Bruel, in movie soundtracks under multiple pseudonyms. In 1997, she met David Godavais, Pygmalion CEO, who immediately pushed her to write her own music. ‘Estrela do Sultao’ (2001) was the first result of those efforts.
